ADVENTURE STARTS HERE: The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail is a paved, non-motorized trail that runs throughout many areas of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The trail is currently 22.5 miles running from Empire to Port Oneida. Pick up the trail at many points- Glen Arbor, Empire, Port Oneida, DH Day Campground.

WHERE TO START: Meet at The Cyclery in downtown Glen Arbor for bike rentals. The staff will set you up with a hybrid bike, which is perfect for handling the terrain (mostly pavement) of the SBHT. They also offer kids bikes, Burleys, Weehoos and Trail-a-Bikes so everyone can enjoy the trail.

OPTIONAL SIDE TREK: Stop by M22 Glen Arbor for wine tasting at the end of your day's adventure. Black Star Farms offers 15 custom blends for the M22 brand. Sample 5 wines for $6 and keep your M22 small stemless glass. The Hard Cider will definitely quench your thirst after biking!

KICK IT UP A NOTCH: Bike the trail south towards Glen Haven. Here you can hike the Sleeping Bear Point Trail right through the heart of the dunes. You'll get some amazing glimpses at Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. Additionally, you can visit the historic district of Glen Haven to see a working blacksmith shop and the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Maritime Museum.

TIPS: A National Park Pass is recommended when biking the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, as the trail goes almost entirely through Sleeping Bear Dunes. Don't worry- you'll need one for so many other things you'll want to explore while visiting the area (Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, the Dune Climb, Pyramid Point, etc.). The Cyclery & M22 Glen Arbor sell both weekly and annual park passes.
